Introduction of Technical textile

Technical textile is a sub-branch of the textile field or it represents the materials that are made specifically for technical applications and manufactured by complex processes.

Production of technical materials and the importance of this branch in textile is increasing with respect to time.

Technical textile fabric formation is far more complex than conventional fabric formation. In addition, technical fabric has a very wide range of properties so, its application is possible in various fields in various ways.

As a result, this branch of textile is growing more and more nowadays and creating its unique identities among other textile products.

Technical textiles are considered one of the most dynamic and future-growing sectors of the textiles industry.

According to the textile terms and definition of Manchester textile university, “Materials and products intended for end-users other than non-protective clothing, household furnishing, and floor covering, where the fabric or fibrous component is selected principally but not exclusively for its performance and properties as opposed to its aesthetic or decorative characteristics"

Technical textiles are textile materials and products manufactured primarily for their performance and functional properties rather than aesthetic or decorative purposes. Aesthetic properties are not much important for Technical Textiles.

Technically, technical textile materials are made from textile fibres, yarn, and fabrics with the help of various methods.

Other components like paper, plastic, metal, ceramic, glass, composite, binding ingredients and reinforcements are useful for the formation of technical textile products.

Application of nonwoven fabrics

Like normal fabrics, they are not made by simple weaving or knitting methods but also involved much more complicated chemical or mechanical processes.

Technical textile materials can be single-used or can even be durable products. They have specific properties like absorbency, filtration, resilience, softness, breathable, flame resistant, heat sealable, light, lint-free, mouldable, soft, stable, stiff, tear-resistant, water repellent, and these properties are further combined to create a fabric for specific fields as per the technical applications.

The wide variety of industries that have increased demand for technical textile materials

  • agrotech: agriculture, aquaculture, horticulture, and forestry.
  • buildtech: building and construction
  • clothtech: technical components of footwear and clothing.
  • Geotech: geotextiles and civil engineering
  • hometech: technical components of furniture, household textiles, and floorcoverings
  • indutech: filtration, conveying, cleaning, and other industrial uses
  • medtech: hygiene and medical
  • mobiltech: automobiles, shipping, railways, and aerospace
  • oekotech: environmental protection
  • packtech: packaging
  • protech: personal and property protection
  • sporttech: sport and leisure.

Rather than these fields, technical textile materials are also used in modern technologies, like electronic components with cloth, smart garments, rocket science, and many more advanced places.
