Honeycomb weave
- A honeycomb weave is a special kind of weave with some special characteristics.
- Honeycomb weave fabric is widely used due to its specific application.
- Honeycomb weave fabric looks like honeycomb cells because its structure has a square-like appearance with the cellular formation in it.
- This kind of structure is formed by higher tensioned and tighter threads' interlacements.
- Honeycomb weaves have mainly two types of design. One is an ordinary honeycomb and the other is a Brighton honeycomb weave.
(1) Ordinary honeycomb
Characteristics of ordinary honeycomb
- A honeycomb weave is highly moisture absorbent than other weaves.
- Ordinary honeycomb makes rough-surfaced fabric.
- Produced fabric is reversible. (Both sides of the fabric have a similar appearance.)
- For design, a repeat size is always an even number.
- For repeat size, the number of ends and picks is independent. (It should be equal or unequal.)
- For each repeat, one cell is present.
- Cell creates ridges and hollows in appearance.
- Ordinary honeycomb weave fabrics are mostly used for absorbing cloths like hand towels, glass cloths, dispensed roller towels, and bath mats. Their moisture absorption properties are useful for this.
- Ordinary honeycomb is also suitable for home furnishings, and for finer qualities for shirts and brocades up to a certain extent.
- In combination with the specific textured yarns, this weave design produced very coarse qualities which are used for cellular blankets.
(2) Brighton Honeycomb
Characteristics of Brighton honeycomb
- Honeycomb weave is highly moisture absorbent than other weave.
- Brighton honeycomb has a complex structure.
- The fabric surface is rough.
- The draft of this design is always a straight draft.
- Brighton honeycomb fabric has a different appearance on both sides so it is a non-reversible fabric.
- In one complete design, 2 small and 2 large cells formed.
- These cells create ridges and hollows in appearance.
End-uses of Brighton honeycomb weave
- Brighton honeycomb is mainly suitable for decorative end usage purposes like quilts and brocades.
- Special kinds of towels like hand towels, glass cloths, and crockery towels are also made from this kind of weave design.
